Contemporary Painting Techniques

There are many ongoing picture techniques.

For example, you can make pastel drawings over a painting, or paint part of a collage. Translucent watercolors can be used over pencil drawings. There are endless options for mixed media paintings.

Scraping and rubbing works finest with acrylic paint. It will produce broken colors and other effects and is often used to create unusual backgrounds. Place two or more colors of paint directly on the canvas and move them around with a flat spatula or the side of an old credit card. Experiment until you have an effect that you like. There is no need to apply an even coat of paint and you can let all of the colors show. Some artists like to let one coat of paint dry and then apply another coat, using different colors.

Creating Textures

Contemporary artists will sometimes take advantage of the fact that acrylic paints behave like glue to create paintings with a lot of texture. Various materials such as sand or tiny beads are mixed into the paint before the painting is made. The acrylic paint dries quickly and the mixed-in substance creates textured effects on the surface of a painting. You can also use commercially prepared gel mediums that already contain sand and other matter for creating textured paintings. You can mix these gels directly into your paint.

Sgraffito

Sgraffito is the technique where an artist paints layers of different colors and lets the paint dry. After it dries, using a tool, the artist scrapes away paint to reveal the color beneath. The tool can be anything that suits the purpose. Examples of sgraffito designs are written words, patterns and small pictures. Results can be quite detailed.

Mixed Media Painting

Mixed media painting is another contemporary art form. Two or more media are combined to create a work of art. These can be various types of paint, such as oil paint, watercolor or acrylic paint used in connection with other art media.Artists are constantly looking for modern ways to clean-cut themselves complete representation. This trend began at the turn of the twentieth century and has continued to this period. Recent types of tint, Craft materials and Accoutrement are constantly activity specious available and many artists experiment with these too as traditional materials to build late techniques.
