Seperate strands of embroidery floss and thread a crewel embroidery needle to end English smocking.
English smocking is embroidery on top of pleats. The pleating creates soft folds and loose fit in a garment, making this type of smocking popular for children's clothing and lingerie. Fabric may be machine-pleated or hand-pleated prior to smocking. Nightgowns with English smocking have smocked yokes in the front, or in the front and back. Pleating created by the smocking process provides fullness, allowing the garment to fit comfortably over the bust and hip areas.
Instructions
1. Select a lingerie pattern in the correct size. See the size chart on the back of the pattern.
2. Purchase fabric and sewing thread according to the pattern instructions.
3. Remove the pattern pieces from the package and iron them to flatten out the creases from the folds. Pin the pattern to the fabric and cut according to the instructions.
6. Sew the nightgown together, following the pattern instructions. Steam iron or press according to the pattern instructions.
5. Work the smocking on the yoke, using embroidery thread and a crewel embroidery needle. Follow the pattern instructions.
4. Use iron-on transfer for dots. Lay the transfer on the yoke of the nightgown.
