National Fund for New Musicals


The National Fund for New Musicals is open to musical organizations and writers looking to produce a new musical. The goals of these programs are to encourage collaborative efforts and to support new musical productions. There are three categories for grants: Writers Residency Grant, Project Development Grant and Production Grant. The Writers Residency Grant is given to writers to work with producers at a National Alliance for Musical Theater member theater. The Project Development Grant is a 2:1 fund matching grant, where recipients can receive up to $6,000. This grant is given to already established projects that need refinement. The Production Grant is given to organizations looking to stage a musical theater production, and grants can range from $10,000 to $20,000 per year. This fund matching grant must be met on a 3:1 basis.

Jonathan Larson Grants


The American Theatre Wing Jonathan Larson Grants are given on a merit-based system to composers, lyricists and book writers working in musical theater. Applicants may apply on an individual basis or as part of a collaborative team. Artists do not need to be U.S. citizens, but they do need permission to work in the U.S. Applicants can only apply for a grant two times during a three-year period. Prior winners are not eligible for additional grants. Award amounts vary.
